History

Georgia Tech was founded in 1885 as the Georgia School of Technology. Since then, Tech has become one of the world’s leading research universities, earning a reputation for excellence in education, research, and service. Throughout our history, we have produced graduates who have gone on to become some of the most accomplished leaders in their fields.

Early History

In 1885, georgia tech was founded in Atlanta as the Georgia School of Technology with the mission of providing an education focused on preparing students for careers in science and technology.

The school’s first class included just 85 students, all of whom were male. The following year, the school began offering its first degree programs: mechanical engineering and metallurgy.

Georgia Tech rapidly grew in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In 1888, the school awarded its first degrees to women, and in 1904, it began offering evening classes to accommodate working students. By 1918, the school had outgrown its original facility and moved to a larger campus northwest of downtown Atlanta. In 1948, Georgia Tech became part of the University System of Georgia.

Today,Georgia Tech is a leading public research university with a student body of more than 25,000 and a faculty of more than 4,000. It is ranked among the top 10 public universities in the United States and is one of only four universities that has been designated a National Science Foundation Engineering Research Center.

Recent History

In the Fall of 1988, one of Georgia Tech’s most serious crisis in its history occurred due to the presence of PCBs (polychlorinated biphenyls) in the offices and classrooms of several buildings on campus. After an investigation, it was determined that the source of the PCBs was old capacitors that had been used in the HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system. These capacitors were no longer being produced, so their replacement created a significant financial burden for the Institute. Nevertheless, with support from the Board of Regents and then-President John Patrick Crecine, Georgia Tech embarked on a multi-year effort to rid its campus of PCBs.

The late 1980s also saw increasing numbers of women and minority students enrolling at Georgia Tech. In an effort to better serve these students, as well as all students, a number of initiatives were launched including the President’s Commission on Minority Affairs and the Women’s Center.

Unfortunately, these good intentions could not prevent another tragedy from striking campus. On August 12th, 1990 a magnitude 5.7 earthquake hit Atlanta causing minor damage to several buildings on campus including West Village dormitories and athletic facilities such as McEachern Memorial Gymnasium. No one was hurt during the quake, but it served as a reminder of the dangers posed by Georgia’s geology.
