This system was developed by Melvil Dewey in 1876 and is still in use today, mainly in libraries. In the Dewey Decimal System, books are assigned a number based on their subject matter. For example, books about mathematics would be grouped together and given a number starting with “5”, while books about history would be grouped together and given a number starting with “9”.
While the Dewey Decimal System is no longer the primary way that libraries organize their collections, it is still used as a supplement to other methods, such as the Library of Congress Classification system.
The Card Catalog
In the pre-Google era, if you wanted to find a book in the library, you had to look it up in the card catalog. The card catalog was a large cabinet that held cards with the titles and author’s names of all the books in the library.
You would start by finding the section for the subject you were interested in. For example, if you were looking for books about animals, you would go to the “natural sciences” section. Then, you would look through the cards until you found the book you were looking for.
