The Buzz began as a student club called the Georgia Tech Esports Association (GTEA). In July 2015, the GTEA partnered with Coca-Cola to create a professional esports team called the Coke Zero Gaming League (CZGL). The CZGL was an online league for amateur players from around the world.

In 2016, The Buzz qualified for and competed in their first offline event, Heroes of the Dorm. They placed second overall. In 2017, The Buzz qualified for and competed in Overwatch Contenders Season Zero: North America. They placed first in their division and qualified for the playoffs.

The Buzz’s appearance has changed over the years, but has always kept the theme of a yellow jacket. The current incarnation was designed by student Chris Bavaria and debuted in October 1999. It features large black antenae, white wings, and six legs.
