How Long Does It Take to Become an EKG Tech?
The average length of time it takes to become an EKG tech is about two years. However, this can vary depending on the specific program you choose and your prior experience. Some programs may offer accelerated options for those with prior medical experience, which can shorten the overall length of time it takes to become an EKG tech.
The EKG Technician Certification Process
Once you have completed an accredited EKG training program, you will need to take and pass the Certified Cardiac Technician (CCT) exam administered by the Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI). The CCI is the world’s largest credentialing organization for cardiovascular professionals. In order to be eligible to take the CCT exam, you must have completed a minimum of five years of full-time work as an EKG technician.
The EKG Technician Training Process
EKG technicians, also known as cardiovascular technicians, monitor heart rhythms and aid in the diagnosis of heart conditions. They work closely with cardiologists, who are physicians specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of heart conditions. EKG technicians typically need to complete a certificate or diploma program that lasts about a year. Some community colleges offer degree programs in cardiovascular technology that last two years or longer, but these programs generally include coursework in other aspects of cardiovascular care, such as vascular technology or Echo tech.
After completing an accredited training program, EKG techs must obtain certification from The Certification Board of Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CBCI). Although certification is not required for all positions, most employers prefer to hire certified technicians. To become certified, candidates must successfully complete a written examination and a skills assessment. The skills assessment must be performed in front of a panel of certified EKG techs.

An EKG technician is a medical professional who is trained to operate this machine and to interpret the results. In order to become an EKG technician, you must complete a certified training program and pass a certification exam.
EKG technicians typically work in hospitals, physician’s offices or clinics. They may also be employed by mobile medical service companies that provide on-site testing services for businesses and organizations. The average annual salary for an EKG technician is $32,000, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS).
