Room and Board
On-campus room and board
Living on campus is a great way to get involved and meet new friends. The cost of on-campus room and board for the 2019-2020 academic year is $10,680. This includes a standard double occupancy room in one of our residence halls, a meal plan, and utilities.
Off-campus room and board
If you choose to live off campus, you will be responsible for securing your own housing and making arrangements for meals. The university does not provide off-campus housing. There are a variety of options available in the Blacksburg area, including apartments, townhouses, houses, and cooperative living arrangements. A number of apartment complexes cater specifically to Virginia Tech students.
The average cost of off-campus room and board is $9,134 per academic year. This figure will vary depending on the type of housing you choose and your personal lifestyle. Costs for utilities (electricity, water, trash removal, etc.), Internet access, furniture, and other incidentals are not included in this figure.

You will need to budget for books and supplies, which can cost around $1,200 per year.
Transportation
The cost of transportation can vary greatly depending on your mode of transportation and how often you plan to use it.
If you plan to bring a car to campus, you will need to pay for parking permits, which cost $230 per semester for students living in on-campus housing, or $115 per semester for students living off-campus. You will also need to pay for gas and routine maintenance on your vehicle.
If you do not bring a car to campus, you can rely on public transportation, which is available both on and off campus. The Blacksburg Transit (BT) operates buses that serve the Virginia Tech community and the Town of Blacksburg. Fares are $1.50 per ride, or $3 for an all-day pass. Students can ride BT buses for free with a valid Hokie Passport ID card.

In addition to tuition and mandatory fees, students should budget for other estimated costs, including books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses.

Transportation costs will depend on the distance from home, whether the student lives on or off campus, and the mode(s) of transportation. For students living at home with their parents or other relatives within commuting distance of Blacksburg, transportation will be minimal. Students who choose to live on campus can expect to pay for a parking permit ($140-$275/academic year); those who live off campus will have additional transportation costs depending on how far they live from campus and whether they own or lease a vehicle.
Personal expenses include items such as laundry, recreation, clothing, health insurance (required for all international students), and telephone service. A reasonable estimate of such expenses for a typical student is $2,000-$3,000 per academic year.
