Georgia Tech’s history begins in the Reconstruction era with the help of Northern philanthropists. They wanted to create a technologically focused institute in the South that would serve as a model for future technological development in the region. The state of Georgia approved their plans, and in 1885, georgia tech was founded as the Georgia School of Technology.
The school initially had a difficult time getting students and faculty, but by 1890 it had its first class of 60 students and 10 faculty members. The school continued to grow, and by 1906 it had over 500 students. In 1908, the first female student was admitted, and in 1913 the school moved to its current location in Atlanta.
During World War II, georgia tech became a major training ground for engineers and scientists who worked on war projects such as the Manhattan Project. After the war, enrollment at the school skyrocketed, and Georgia Tech became one of the leading engineering schools in the country.
