Once you have your high school diploma or equivalent, you will need to complete an accredited pharmacy technician training program. Once you have completed your accredited training program, you will then need to pass a national certification exam. In some states, you may also be required to obtain a state-specific license. Once you have completed all of these steps, you will be able to apply for a position at CVS.

The Training Process

Once they have completed the program, pharmacy technicians must take a national certification exam. Those who pass the exam receive a certificate that they must renew every two years.

In-Person Training

Becoming a pharmacy technician at CVS Pharmacy® starts with completing an accredited training program. CVS Health offers both an online and an in-person training program to become a pharmacy technician. The in-person program is conducted at one of our state-of-the-art Training Centers, and upon successful completion, you’ll be eligible to take the national certification exam and apply for a position as a pharmacy technician with CVS Health.

The Certification Process

There are a few steps you need to take in order to become a certified pharmacy technician at CVS. The first step is to complete a pharmacy technician training program. Once you have completed the training program, you will need to take and pass a certification exam. After you have passed the exam, you will need to register with the state in which you plan to work.

Certification Exams

After you have completed a training program, you will need to take a certification exam in order to become a certified pharmacy technician.

The pharmacy technician certification exam (PTCE) is administered by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB). To be eligible to take the PTCE, you must have a high school diploma or equivalent, complete an accredited pharmacy technician training program, and have no felony convictions.

You can register for the PTCE online at the PTCB website. The exam fee is $129, and you will need to submit proof of your eligibility when you register.

The PTCE is a computer-based exam consisting of 90 multiple-choice questions. You will have two hours to complete the exam, and you will need to achieve a score of 70% or higher to pass.

Once you have passed the PTCE, you will be certified as a pharmacy technician by the PTCB. Certification is good for two years, after which you will need to renew your certification by completing 20 hours of continuing education and paying a renewal fee of $40.

The Job Duties of a Pharmacy Tech

As a pharmacy tech, you will be responsible for a variety of tasks. You will need to be able to accurately count medication, pour liquids, and measure powders. You will also be responsible for stocking shelves and keeping the pharmacy clean.
