Step One: Complete a High School Education or Equivalent
In order to become a vet tech assistant, you will need to complete a high school education or equivalent. After completing high school, you should consider taking some courses at a community college that will help you prepare for a career in the veterinary field. Once you have completed your post-secondary education, you will be eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE).
Step Two: Enroll in and Complete an Accredited Veterinary Technician Program
The next step to becoming a vet tech assistant is to enroll in and complete an accredited veterinary technician program. There are many schools across the country that offer these programs, and most of them can be completed in two years or less.
During your coursework, you’ll learn about topics such as animal anatomy, physiology, nutrition, and pharmacology. You’ll also gain hands-on experience working with animals in a clinical setting. Once you’ve completed your program, you’ll need to pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become a licensed veterinary technician.
Step Three: Become Licensed or Registered in Your State
In order to work as a veterinary technician assistant, you will need to be licensed or registered in your state. Each state has different requirements, but most require that you have graduated from an accredited veterinary technology program and pass a state exam.

The AAVSB offers the Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) credential. To qualify, you must have graduated from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program and pass a credentialing exam. Once you become an RVT, you must maintain your credential by earning continuing education credits and paying an annual fee.
Step Five: Find a Job and Start Working
Once you have completed your education and training, you will be ready to start your career as a vet tech assistant. To find a job, you can search online job boards, apply directly to veterinary clinics or hospitals, or use a staffing agency that specializes in placing veterinary professionals.
When you have found a position that interests you, be sure to read the job description carefully and only apply if you meet all of the qualifications. Once you have submitted your application or resume, the next step is usually an interview. This is your opportunity to show the employer why you are the best candidate for the job.
