Get a degree in veterinary technology
The first step to becoming a zoo vet tech is to get a degree in veterinary technology from an accredited college or university. Veterinary technology programs typically take two to four years to complete and include coursework in animal anatomy, physiology, diseases and treatments. Many programs also include clinical experience working with animals in a veterinary hospital or clinic setting.
After completing a veterinary technology program, graduates must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) to become licensed or certified in their state as a veterinary technician. Some states also require that vet techs complete continuing education courses on an ongoing basis to maintain their license or certification.
Once you have completed all of the necessary educational and licensing requirements, you can begin seeking out employment as a zoo vet tech. Many zoo vet techs work in zoos, animal sanctuaries or rescue organizations, but some also work in private veterinary practices that treat exotic animals.
Get licensed
In order to become a zoo vet tech, you will need to get licensed in the state in which you wish to practice. Most states require vet techs to complete a two-year accredited veterinary technology program and pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) in order to be licensed. You can find a list of accredited programs on the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) website. Once you have completed an accredited program and passed the VTNE, you will need to apply for a license from your state’s Board of Veterinary Examiners.
Find a job
The best way to become a zoo vet tech is to find a job working with animals at a zoo. This can be done by applying for a job as a veterinary technician at a zoo, or by working as an animal caretaker at a zoo. Once you have a job working with animals at a zoo, you will be able to learn about the care of different animals and how to work with them.
Maintain your license
In order to maintain your license, you will need to renew it every few years and take continuing education courses to stay up-to-date on the latest advances in veterinary medicine. You will also need to maintain good standing with the licensing board in your state and comply with all of their requirements.
