The VTNE is also used to licensure veterinary technicians in many states.
Who is a Veterinary Technician?
A veterinary technician is a medical professional who works in animal hospitals and clinics to provide direct patient care under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian. Veterinary technicians perform many of the same duties as human nurses in doctor’s offices and hospitals. They take histories, collect samples, perform lab tests, take X-rays, assist in surgeries and provide nursing care. Often called “vet techs”, these professionals are an invaluable part of the animal health care team.
There are more than 100 accredited vet tech programs across the country that can be completed in two years or less. Most programs lead to an Associate’s Degree, but there are also Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree programs available. Upon graduation, students must pass a national exam to become certified and licensed in their state. Veterinary technicians must also complete continuing education requirements throughout their career to maintain their license.

The Future of Veterinary Technician
There is a big demand for veterinary technicians nationwide and the profession is only expected to grow in the future. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 19% growth in employment for veterinary technicians between 2016 and 2026. This is much faster than the average growth rate for all occupations, which is only 7%.
There are many reasons for this high demand. First, there is an increasing number of pet owners. According to the American Veterinary Medical Association, 56% of households in the united states have at least one pet. This is up from 54% just 10 years ago. As more people own pets, there will be a greater need for veterinary care.
Another reason for the high demand of vet techs is that veterinarians are increasingly relying on them to provide care for their patients. Veterinary technicians are trained to perform many of the same tasks as veterinarians, such as taking X-rays, administering vaccines, and providing dental care. They also play an important role in assisting with surgeries and other medical procedures.
