Introduction
Founded in 1872, virginia tech is a public, land-grant university with a main campus in Blacksburg, Virginia. The university also has educational facilities in six regions statewide and a study abroad site in Switzerland. Virginia Tech’s more than 32,000 students pursue 230 undergraduate, graduate, and professional degrees through nine schools and colleges. The university offers research opportunities to faculty and students through its many centers, institutes, and labs, including the Wallops Flight Facility on the Eastern Shore of Virginia and the Advanced Research Institute in Arlington.
Applying to Virginia Tech
There are a few things you need to do in order to apply to virginia tech First, you need to fill out the Common App. Once you’ve done that, you’ll need to create an account on the virginia tech website. After you’ve done that, you’ll be able to access the Virginia Tech application.
Applying as a Freshman
The process of applying to Virginia Tech as a freshman is relatively simple. You will first need to fill out and submit the Common App, which can be found on the Virginia Tech website. In addition to the Common App, you will also need to submit your high school transcripts, SAT or ACT scores, and a personal essay.

Applying as a Transfer Student
If you have completed college coursework at another institution after high school graduation, you will apply as a transfer student. You must have a minimum of 24 transferable semester hours (36 quarter hours) of coursework to be considered for admission, but we strongly encourage you to have at least 30 semester hours (45 quarter hours) for a better chance at admission and success in courses.
To be admitted as a transfer student, you must:
– Earn a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale in all college-level coursework attempted, and
– Complete the transfer admissions application and submit all required documents by the deadline for your intended term of entry.
In addition to meeting the general requirements for admission, most applicants will also need to satisfy our English Proficiency requirement and submit either SAT or ACT scores.
Tuition and Financial Aid
Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university with an acceptance rate of 70%. In-state tuition and fees for fall 2019 were $12,655, while out-of-state tuition and fees were $34,131. The university offers a number of scholarships and financial aid programs to help students offset the cost of attendance.
In-State Tuition
In order to qualify for in-state tuition rates, students must meet the criteria established by the Virginia General Assembly and the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia. In general, students must have established Virginia residency for at least 12 months prior to the first day of classes in order to be classified as a Virginia resident for tuition purposes. Exceptions to this general rule may be granted for certain categories of students, such as active duty military personnel, alumni of Virginia institutions, or employees of Virginia companies.
To establish residency in Virginia, students must demonstrate that they have moved to the state with the intention of making it their permanent home. This can be done through a number of methods, such as establishing a driver’s license or voter registration in Virginia, filing state taxes as a resident, or owning property in the state. Out-of-state tuition for Virginia Tech is $30,742 for the 2019-2020 academic year. Financial aid is available to help offset the cost of tuition for those who qualify. To be eligible for out-of-state tuition, students must meet the following criteria:
-Be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen
-Be a Virginia resident for at least 12 months prior to enrolling at Virginia Tech
-Have graduated from a Virginia high school or earned a GED in Virginia
-Submit an application for admission to Virginia Tech
Financial Aid
Financial aid is money that helps students pay for college. More than two-thirds of all undergraduate students get some form of financial aid. There are four types of financial aid:
-Grants and scholarships: free money that does not have to be repaid.
-Work-study: a program that allows students to work and earn money to help pay for college.
-Loans: money that must be repaid, with interest.
-Parent PLUS Loans: federal loans that parents can get to help pay for their child’s education.
To apply for financial aid, you will need to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.gov. You will need your parents’ tax information to fill out the form. You can get more information about financial aid from your high school guidance counselor or the financial aid office at the college you plan to attend.
Student Life
