Born Aaron Dontez Yates in Kansas City, Missouri on November 8, 1971, Yates was raised primarily by his mother after his father left when he was eight years old. He would hustle crack on the streets while also attending school; however he dropped out at age 17. Yates began rapping locally in 1985 alongside fellow Kansas City native Travis O’Guin with whom he founded the rap duo Travesty upon graduating high school in 1989. However the group disbanded soon afterwards due to creative differences.

The album was very successful and peaked at number five on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
In 2003, Tech N9ne released his fourth albumAbsolute Zero which was another success for him commercially and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 1 million copies worldwide. In 2004, he released his fifth album Everready (The Religion) which was yet another success for him commercially and peaked at number three on the Billboard 200 chart and sold over 1 million copies worldwide.
