Texas Tech’s Football Program
Texas Tech’s football program is one of the most storied in all of college football. The Red Raiders have made 33 bowl appearances, including 14 in a row from 2001-2014. That streak was the second longest in college football history. texas tech has also won at least 10 games in a season eight times, most recently in 2019.
The team’s recent success
In the four years under Kliff Kingsbury, texas tech has improved from 4-8 to 7-6 to 8-5 to 9-4. The Red Raiders have never won more than nine games in a season during the Kingsbury era, but they have also never lost more than six games.
The team’s history
Texas Tech’s football program began in 1925 with a game against West Texas State Teachers College. The team won that game, and went on to have a very successful season. The next year, the team joined the Southwest Conference and won the conference championship.
The team had a few down years in the early 1930s, but rebounded in 1934 with another conference championship. The team was successful again in the late 1930s and early 1940s, winning another conference championship in 1939 and appearing in several bowl games.
The 1950s were a decade of success for the team, as they won their third conference championship in 1953 and appeared in six bowl games. The 1960s were not as successful, but the team did make it to four bowl games.
The 1970s were a rebuilding decade for the program, as they only made it to two bowl games. The 1980s were more successful, as the team won their fourth conference championship in 1986 and made it to seven bowl games.
The 1990s were a decade of great success for Texas Tech’s football program. The team won five conference championships and made it to eleven bowl games. The 2000s were not as successful, as the team only won one conference championship and made it to six bowl games.
Texas Tech has had moderate success since 2010, winning two conference championships and making it to five bowl games.
The Different Bowls
The college football bowl season is upon us and Texas Tech is set to take on Minnesota in the Meineke Car Care Bowl of Texas. This is the first time the Red Raiders will be playing in this particular bowl game. Let’s take a look at the different bowl games that college football teams can participate in.
The Cotton Bowl
The Cotton Bowl is a college football bowl game that is played annually on New Year’s Day (or January 2 if New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday) at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game features a matchup of two of the top teams from the Southeastern Conference and the Big 12 Conference.
The Fiesta Bowl
The Fiesta Bowl is a college football bowl game played annually on December 31, or January 1 if New Year’s Day falls on a Sunday, at the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
The Orange Bowl
The Orange Bowl is a Division I college football bowl game played annually at Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. The Orange Bowl is one of the New Year’s Six bowls, which are the top six games in the College Football Playoff.
