Texas Tech University is a public research university in Lubbock, Texas. Established in 1925 as a junior college, it became a four-year institution in 1967. Texas Tech’s athletic teams compete in Division I of the NCAA and are known as the Red Raiders. The university’s athletics programs are collectively known as “The Red Raider Nation”.
The History of Texas Tech
texas tech university began as a vision of Texas’ first governor, George White. He established the school in Lubbock in 1923 as a college for the training of teachers. TTU became a four-year university in 1927 and began offering graduate degrees in 1930. In the 1960s, under the leadership of President Claude L. Mallett, the school underwent a period of tremendous growth, becoming a comprehensive university with nationally recognized programs in engineering and the sciences.
Today, texas tech is a Tier One research university with an enrollment of more than 36,000 students. The campus features beautiful Spanish Renaissance architecture and is home to a renowned art museum, performance hall, and one of the largest college bookstores in the country. The university is also home to the National Ranching Heritage Center, which chronicles the history of ranching in the American West.
