Associate’s Degree
Most people who want to become a vet tech have at least a 2-year associate’s degree in veterinary technology, although some have bachelor’s degrees. Associate’s degree programs in vet tech include coursework in chemistry, animal physiology, anatomy, and zoology, among other subjects.
Bachelor’s Degree
vet techs typically need at least a 2-year associate degree to enter the profession, although some jobs may require a bachelor’s degree. AVMA-accredited veterinary technology programs are available at many community colleges, technical colleges, and universities across the country. These programs typically take 2-4 years to complete and include coursework in animal science, chemistry, anesthesia, pharmacology, and other subjects relevant to veterinary medicine. Some states require vet techs to be licensed or registered; requirements vary by state.
Veterinary Technician Certification
In order to become a certified veterinary technician, you will need to complete a two-year associate’s degree in veterinary technology from an accredited institution. Alternatively, you can also complete a four-year bachelor’s degree in veterinary technology. However, most employers prefer candidates who have completed the two-year associate’s degree program.
