The Basics
An ultrasound technician, also known as a diagnostic medical sonographer is a professional who uses diagnostic imaging equipment to capture images and footage of the inside of the human body. In order to become an ultrasound technician, you will need to have a strong understanding of human anatomy and physiology. You will also need to be able to operate the ultrasound machine and have a keen eye for detail.
You need to have a high school diploma or GED
Most ultrasound technician programs require that applicants have a high school diploma or GED. Some schools may also require applicants to take and pass a basic skills assessment test.
In addition to a high school diploma or GED, most ultrasound technician programs require that applicants have completed some college coursework, although the specific courses required vary by program. Some schools offer admission to students who have completed a two-year associate’s degree in radiologic technology, but this is not always necessary.
You will need to complete an accredited training program

Registries measure your knowledge of the subject matter and whether you can apply that knowledge. The American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography (ARDMS) offers examinations in abdomen, obstetrics & gynecology, physics, and abdominal vascular ultrasound. The American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) has an examination for sonography professionals who wish to become registered in ultrasound.
Competencies measure your ability to perform specific tasks related to sonography. You will be given a task to complete, such as setting up equipment or demonstrating proper patient positioning. The ARDMS offers a Competency Based Clinical Simulation Examination (C-CSWE), which is a computer-based assessment that consists of 10 clinical simulation cases.
