So, you want to be a vet tech? Here’s what you need to know. In order to become a licensed veterinary technician, you’ll need to complete a two-year veterinary technology program and pass a state exam.

The Necessary Education
A vet tech more formally known as a veterinary technician, is an integral part of any animal hospital or clinic. Though the day-to-day duties of a vet tech may vary depending on the employer, the necessary education and skills are consistent.
High School
You need to complete high school or obtain a GED to become a vet tech. During high school you should take classes in biology and chemistry. You should also consider completing an internship at a local animal hospital or shelter.
Post-Secondary Education
There are more than 200 accredited veterinary technology programs across the united states most of which lead to an Associate’s Degree in Veterinary Technology. A few schools offer a Bachelor’s Degree, but this is not currently required for licensure in any state. Admission to a veterinary technology program typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent, although some programs may have additional requirements such as courses in biology or chemistry.
Most veterinary technology programs include both classroom and clinical instruction. Coursework typically includes topics such as animal anatomy and physiology, animal husbandry, pharmacology, nutrition, surgical nursing, anesthesia, radiology, and clinical laboratory procedures. Students also gain experience working with animals in clinical settings through externships or internships. Upon graduation, vet techs must pass a state-administered examination in order to become licensed and practice in their state.
The Right Skills
Like any profession, becoming a vet tech requires you to have the right skills. You must have excellent communication skills since you will be dealing with pet owners on a daily basis. You must also have good organizational skills since you will be responsible for keeping the clinic running smoothly. In addition, you must be able to handle the physical demands of the job since you will be on your feet for long periods of time. Finally, you must have a passion for helping animals. If you have all of these skills, then you are well on your way to becoming a vet tech!
Communication Skills
Becoming a vet tech requires excellent communication skills. You will need to be able to communicate effectively with animal owners, other members of the veterinary team, and other professionals. You will also need to be able to communicate effectively in writing, as you will be required to keep accurate medical records.
Compassion
vet techs need to have compassion for animals. This includes being able to handle them carefully and with patience, even when they are injured, sick, or scared.
Interpersonal Skills
In order to succeed as a vet tech, you will need to have excellent interpersonal skills. This means being able to effectively communicate with both animals and their owners. You will also need to be able to work well as part of a team, as you will be working closely with other members of the veterinary staff.
Organizational Skills
One of the skills that a vet tech needs to have is the ability to stay organized. This job requires you to juggle multiple tasks at once, sometimes with very little notice. You need to be able to keep track of which animals need which treatments and when those treatments are due. You also need to be able to find information quickly when the veterinarian asks for it. Good organizational skills will help you succeed in this job.
Physical Stamina
Working as a vet tech requires being on your feet for long periods of time and being able to lift heavy animals. If you have a physical condition that limits your mobility or your ability to lift heavy objects, then becoming a vet tech may not be the right career choice for you.
The Necessary Certification
If you’re interested in becoming a vet tech, the first step is learning about the necessary certification. The Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE) is required for licensure in most states. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) administers the VTNE. Certification through the National Veterinary Technician Examining Board (NVTOB) is also available.
Licensed Veterinary Technician
In order to work as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), you must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Once you have passed the VTNE, you will need to apply to your state’s veterinary board for licensure. Each state has different requirements for licensure, so it is important to check with your state’s veterinary board for specific requirements. Some states may require that you also take a state-specific exam in addition to the VTNE.
Registered Veterinary Technician
In order to practice as a Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT), you must first pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). The VTNE is a timed, computer-based test that covers all aspects of veterinary medicine. After passing the VTNE, you must then apply to your state’s Veterinary Medical Board for licensure. Each state has different requirements for licensure, so be sure to check with your state’s board for specific information. Once you are licensed, you can begin practicing as an RVT.
The Necessary Experience
Becoming a vet tech requires a bit more than just a love for animals. There is a fair amount of experience that is necessary in order to apply for the credentialing process. Veterinary Technician Externships
You’ll want to get some experience working with animals before you start your veterinary technician program. While in high school, you can volunteer at animal shelters or veterinary clinics. Once you’re in college, many programs require that you complete a certain number of hours working in a clinic as part of your curriculum. Once you graduate, you may be able to find a position as a technician trainee, but most employers prefer to hire technicians who have already completed an externship.
