What is GPA?

GPA stands for Grade Point Average. It’s a measure of how well you did in all your courses, on a scale of 0 to 4.0.

Virginia Tech uses a 4.0 scale, so your GPA can range from 0 to 4.0. The average GPA at Virginia Tech is 3.64. To be eligible for admission, you’ll need a GPA of at least 3.0.

How is GPA Calculated?

GPA is calculated by assigning quality points to each letter grade (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C =2.0 D=1.0) and dividing the total quality points by the number of attempted credits. A student’s GPA is recalculated at the end of each semester by the Registrar’s Office, based on the grades earned in that semester.

For example: If a student completes 12 credits of coursework with the following grades: 3 “A” grades (4.0 x 3), 6 “B” grades (3.0 x 6), and 3 “C” grades (2.0 x 3), the student’s GPA would be worked out as follows:

4.0 x 3 + 3.0 x 6 + 2.0 x= 32.0
32.0 ÷ 12 = 2.67 GPA
