Education and Training

All states require X-ray technicians to be licensed or certified. Although requirements vary by state, most programs include classroom and clinical instruction in subjects such as human anatomy, physiology and medical ethics. Students also learn how to position patients and use imaging equipment.
After completing an accredited program, candidates must pass a national certification examination administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT). States that have their own certification process use the ARRT examination as well. Once certified, radiologic technologists must complete continuing education credits to maintain their registration.
To become a certified X-ray technician, you must graduate from an accredited certification program and pass a national exam. Once you have completed these requirements, you will be able to earn the Certified Radiology Technician (CRT) credential.
There are a number of accredited certification programs to choose from, and most will take between 12 and 24 months to complete. Upon completion of an accredited program, you will be eligible to sit for the national exam.
The national exam is administered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technicians (ARRT). To pass the exam, you must demonstrate your knowledge of X-ray technology and safety procedures. Once you have passed the exam, you will be awarded the CRT credential.
With your CRT credential in hand, you will be ready to begin your career as a certified X-ray technician.
