National Rankings
In 2019, U.S. News & World Report ranked texas tech as the 37th best public university in the united states and 119th among all national universities. In their “Best Colleges” rankings, they also placed texas tech tied for 109th among all national universities and tied for 46th among public schools. When it comes to undergraduate engineering programs, texas tech is tied for 73rd in the nation.

Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education
The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education (WSJ/THE) US College Rankings for 2019 have placed Texas Tech University at No. 134, up 19 spots from its last ranking in 2018.
This is the second consecutive year that Texas Tech has been ranked in the top 150 of the WSJ/THE rankings. The rise in ranking is due in part to significant increases in both faculty-to-student ratios and average class sizes.
“It is an honor to be recognized as one of the top universities in the nation,” said Texas Tech University President Lawrence Schovanec. “This prestigious ranking is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our faculty, staff, and students.”
The WSJ/THE US College Rankings are based on 15 factors across four broad categories: resources, engagement, outcomes and environment. The complete 2019 rankings can be found on the WSJ/THE website.

In September 2019, Forbes ranked Texas Tech University at #137 in their annual list of America’s Top Public Colleges.
Program Rankings
U.S. News & World Report released its 2020 Best Graduate Schools rankings on March 10, 2019. In the rankings, Texas Tech University’s Whitacre College of Engineering is tied for 88th among all engineering programs nationwide, up from 91st last year.

National Science Foundation
The National Science Foundation (NSF) is a United States government agency that supports fundamental research and education in all the non-medical fields of science and engineering. Its medical counterpart is the National Institutes of Health. With an annual budget of about US$7.0 billion, the NSF funds approximately 24% of all federally supported basic research conducted by America’s colleges and universities. In some fields, such as mathematics, computer science, economics, and the social sciences, the NSF is the major source of federal backing.
The agency’s stated mission is “to promote the progress of science; to advance the national health, prosperity, and welfare; and to secure the national defense.”
As of March 2015, 11 Texas Tech University programs are ranked in the top 100 by the National Science Foundation.
