NCAA Tournament Seeding
Every year, the NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee seeds the field for the NCAA Tournament. The seeding process is a complicated one, and it takes into account a team’s record, strength of schedule, recent performance, and various other factors. The goal is to create a balanced field that will produce the most competitive and entertaining games possible.
How the NCAA Tournament seeding process works
In order to understand how the NCAA Tournament seeding process works, it is first important to understand how the NCAA chooses which teams will participate in the tournament.
The NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Committee is responsible for selecting, seeding and bracketing all 63 teams that will take part in the annual NCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. The committee members are made up of 10 college athletic directors who are appointed by the NCAA.
The committee uses a number of factors to determine which teams will take part in the tournament and where they will be seeded. Some of these factors include:
-The team’s record
-How the team has fared against other tournament-caliber opponents
-The strength of the team’s conference
-How the team has performed in recent weeks
Once the committee has selected and seeded all 63 teams, they are placed into one of four regional brackets. The four regional brackets are:
-The East region
-The West region
-The Midwest region -The South region

What factors the NCAA Selection Committee looks at when seeding teams
The NCAA Selection Committee looks at many factors when they are seeding the teams in the NCAA tournament. They look at the team’s record, how they have done against other teams, how they have done in their last 10 games, and many other factors.
Virginia Tech’s NCAA Tournament History
Virginia Tech has a long and storied history in the NCAA Tournament, dating back to its first appearance in 1942. The Hokies have made the tournament a total of 23 times, with their most recent appearance coming in 2019. virginia tech has never won the NCAA Tournament, but they have come close, reaching the Elite Eight in 1967 and 1985.
The Hokies’ best NCAA Tournament finishes
virginia tech has made the NCAA Tournament 11 times in its history. The Hokies’ best NCAA Tournament finish came in 1967, when they made it to the Elite Eight. Virginia Tech has also made it to the Sweet Sixteen four times (1939, 1967, 1985, 2019) and the Round of 32 seven times (1946, 1955, 1984, 1986, 2007, 2018, 2019).
Virginia Tech’s most notable NCAA Tournament upsets
Throughout Virginia Tech’s history, the men’s basketball team has pulled off a few notable upsets in the NCAA Tournament.
In 1967, an underdog Virginia Tech team led by unheralded head coach Charlie Moir upset hot-shooting New Mexico State in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The victory was especially sweet for Moir, who had been passed over for the job at his alma mater, Virginia, in favor of Bill Foster just a few years earlier.
In 2007, Virginia Tech again entered the NCAA Tournament as underdogs, this time as a #10 seed. But led by future NBA player Jamaal Franklin, the Hokies upset #7 seed Louisville in the first round before eventually falling to eventual national champion Ohio State in the Sweet Sixteen.
And in 2019, Virginia Tech once again proved doubters wrong by upsetting #5 seed Mississippi State in the first round as a #12 seed. The Hokies would go on to lose to eventual national champion University of Virginia in the Sweet Sixteen that year.
Virginia Tech’s Chances of Getting a Good Seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament
Virginia Tech has a chance to be a good seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament. They have a strong record and have beaten some good teams. They have a good chance to make a run in the tournament.
The Hokies’ resume
As of right now, Virginia Tech has an overall record of 21-7, and a conference record of 11-5. They are currently ranked as the No. 23 team in the nation by the Associated Press, and are projected to be a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament by ESPN Bracketology.
The Hokies have some good wins on their resume, including a victory over then-No. 5 Duke early in the season. They also have wins over fellow tournament teams Louisville, Florida State, and Marquette. They have seven losses on their resume, with four of those coming against teams that are currently projected to be No. 1 seeds (Kansas, Dayton, Florida State twice).
Looking at Virginia Tech’s resume, it is clear that they have some work to do if they want to move up into a higher seed heading into Selection Sunday. The Hokies will have a chance to improve their resume in their final four regular season games, as well as in the ACC Tournament. If they can string together some victories in those games, they should be in good shape to earn a high seed come March 2020.
Virginia Tech’s RPI and KenPom rankings
Virginia Tech’s RPI and KenPom rankings are both good but not great. The Hokies’ RPI rank is 32 and their KenPom rank is 27. They have only lost 4 games all season, with 3 of those losses coming against Duke. Virginia Tech’s remaining regular season games are all against teams that are below them in the RPI rankings. They will most likely finish the regular season with a record of 25-5 (13-5 in ACC play).
Looking at Virginia Tech’s resume, they have some good wins but not many great wins. Their best win is probably either against LSU (RPI 41) or Penn State (RPI 44). They also have 10 losses against RPI Top 50 teams. 8 of those losses were to Duke, Louisville, and North Carolina – 3 of the best teams in the country.
I think Virginia Tech will be a 4 or 5 seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
The Hokies’ remaining regular season schedule
The Hokies have a few tough games remaining on their regular season schedule, but they should still be in contention for a good seed in the 2020 NCAA Tournament.
Their first big test will come on February 29th when they travel to take on Duke. The Blue Devils are currently ranked #1 in the AP poll and are widely considered to be one of the best teams in the country.
Virginia Tech will also have to face off against North Carolina and Louisville before the end of the regular season. Both of those teams are also ranked in the AP poll and will likely be tough matchups for the Hokies.
Assuming Virginia Tech can take care of business in those games, they should be in good position to earn a top-four seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Conclusion
After a great deal of analysis, it seems that Virginia Tech will most likely be a #6 seed in the NCAA tournament. This is good news for the team, as they have a chance to make a run in the tournament. However, they will need to play well in order to advance.
Virginia Tech’s most likely NCAA Tournament seed
As of right now, Virginia Tech is most likely to be a No. 6 seed in the NCAA Tournament. They have a strong chance of making it to the Sweet Sixteen, but their chances of going further than that are not as good.
