A good rule of thumb is to tip 15 to 20 percent of the total bill.

The Standard Tip

While the standard tip for a beauty service is 20 percent, this may not be the case for nail services. In most salons, the starting price for a manicure is around $15, and the average price for a basic pedicure is around $30. For these services, a 20 percent tip would be $3 for a manicure and $6 for a pedicure — which may be considered too low by some nail technicians.

If you’re unsure what an appropriate tip would be, ask your nail technician before your service starts. They may be able to give you a range that is acceptable in their salon. You can also check with the front desk or other staff members to see if they have any suggestions.

In general, it’s always better to err on the side of giving too much rather than too little. A good rule of thumb is to start with 20 percent and increase the amount if you’re happy with the service. If you’re concerned about over-tipping, you can always ask to have the extra money applied to the cost of your next service.

The Add-On Tip

The Add-On Tip is exactly what it sounds like. You simply add a couple of dollars to the cost of your service to show your appreciation for a job well done. This is most commonly seen with add-on services, like when your technician spends extra time on a difficult nail art design or provides you with a luxurious hand massage during your pedicure.

The Big Spender Tip

If you are someone who generally spends a lot of money on your nails, then you should consider tipping your nail technician 20%. This is especially true if you are someone who gets regular manicures and pedicures. Your nail technician will appreciate the extra money, and it will show that you are a big tipper.

The Generous Tip

When it comes to tipping your nail technician, the general rule of thumb is to be generous. Even though the standard tip is 15 percent, you may want to consider giving 20 percent or more if you’re happy with the service. Keep in mind that your nail technician likely doesn’t make a lot of money, so a larger tip can make a big difference.

The Exception to the Rule

Even though the industry standard for tipping is 20 percent, there are always going to be exceptions to the rule. If you feel like your nail technician went above and beyond to give you an amazing service, then by all means, tip more than 20 percent. If you only got a basic manicure with no frills, then it’s perfectly acceptable to only give a 10-15 percent tip.
