The Rivalry
The Georgia-georgia tech football rivalry is one of the biggest in college football. The two teams have been playing each other since 1893 and it is one of the oldest rivalries in the sport. The game is usually played in the last week of the regular season and it is always a sellout.
The History of the Rivalry
The Georgia-georgia tech football rivalry is one of the most storied and tradition-rich rivalries in college football. The two schools have been playing each other since 1893 and have met 120 times on the gridiron.
The rivalry began to heat up in the early 1900s when georgia tech defeated Georgia in back-to-back years, including a stunning upset in 1914 that saw theYellow Jackets win despite being heavily outweighed by the Bulldogs.
The teams continued to play each other every year until World War II temporarily halted the series from 1943 to 1945. When the two schools resumed play in 1946, they did so with a bang as Georgia Tech upset No. 4 Georgia en route to an undefeated season and national championship.
The rivalry has continued uninterrupted since then, with the two teams meeting every year except for one (1983). In recent years, the series has been particularly competitive, with neither team holding more than a four-game winning streak since 2000.
The game is typically played on Thanksgiving weekend and is one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the college football season in the state of Georgia.
The Current Rivalry
The two schools have been rivals since 1893, when they first met on the gridiron. The football series is the third-longest uninterrupted rivalry in NCAA Division I FBS behind only Iowa–Iowa State (1894) and Texas–Texas A&M (1899).
In the 120-year history of the series, Georgia holds a 63–46–5 advantage over Georgia Tech. The teams have played each other almost every year since 1924, with only three exceptions (1943, 1944, and 1945) due to World War II.
Since 1981, the winner of the game has been awarded the Governor’s Cup.
The Schedule
The game is always the last Saturday of the college football regular season. In 2019, it will be played on November 30. The game has been played every year since 1925, making it the longest-running rivalry in the South.
The Regular Season
During the regular season, the Georgia Bulldogs play their SEC rivals, as well as some other top university football teams. They also face off against the georgia tech yellow jackets in what is known as the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate game. The full schedule is typically released in late summer.
The Post-Season
The postseason begins on Thanksgiving weekend with conference championship games. The four teams that make the College Football Playoff are announced on Selection Sunday, which is the Sunday after conference championship weekend. The playoff semi-finals are played on December 28 or 29 and the national championship game is played on January 13 or 14.
The Future
The next game is not until November 30th, 2019.
The Rivalry in the Future
The Georgia-Georgia Tech rivalry is one of the oldest and most storied in college football. The two teams have been playing each other since 1893, and they have faced off nearly every year since then.
The rivalry took on added significance in the 1980s when the two teams began competing for the same conference championship. Since then, the winner of the Georgia-georgia tech game has gone on to win the conference championship 19 times out of 32 times.
The future of the rivalry is uncertain, however, as the two teams are currently scheduled to play each other only once every four years. This is due to conference realignment, as Georgia Tech is now a member of the ACC and Georgia is a member of the SEC.
It is possible that the two teams could meet again in a bowl game or playoff game in the future, but it is unlikely that they will face each other as often as they have in the past.
