The Red Raiders football team represents texas tech university (TTU) in the sport of American football. The Red Raiders compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the national collegiate athletic association (NCAA) and the Western Division of the Big 12 Conference. Since their establishment as a collegiate football program in 1925, the Red Raiders have claimed 15 conference championships, made 40 bowl appearances, both of which are tops among all NCAA Division I FBS programs at the time, and have produced two Heisman Trophy winners: Graham Harrell and Kyler Murray.
Texas Tech’s first season was in 1925, and their first conference championship came in 1929. In 1956, texas tech joined Oklahoma A&M to form the Southwest Conference. After several successful seasons as a member of that conference, texas tech left to help form the Big 8 Conference in 1960 with Baylor, Colorado, Iowa State, Kansas State, Missouri and Nebraska. The Red Raiders won their only National Championship as a member of that conference following their perfect 11-0 season during the 1963 season. Following numerous changes to college football over several decades such as teams switching conferences or folding altogether as well as league realignments, Texas Tech became a charter member of what would eventually be called the Big 12 Conference when it was founded in 1996 with Baylor, Colorado State,-Kansas,-Kansas State,-Missouri,-Nebraskaand Oklahoma.
The current head coach is Matt Wells who was hired on November 29th, 2018 after Kliff Kingsbury was fired following six seasons with TTU.
