In order to raise awareness about the valuable work vet techs do, the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) has designated the third week of October as national vet tech week This year, vet tech appreciation week will be celebrated from October 15-21.
Vet techs are an important part of the veterinary team, and they play a vital role in the provision of quality animal care. These skilled professionals provide assistance to veterinarians in a variety of settings, including private practices, zoos, animal shelters, and research facilities.

The History of Vet Tech Appreciation Week
National Veterinary Technician Week is a weeklong celebration of the veterinary technicians and nurses who provide life-saving care for our furry friends.
The profession of veterinary technology has a long and fascinating history. The first veterinary school was founded in Lyon, France in 1762, but it wasn’t until almost a hundred years later that the first veterinary technician program was established. In 1965, just five years after the founding of the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), St. Louis Community College began offering the first associate degree in veterinary technology.
Today, there are over 200 accredited vet tech programs across the country, and vet techs can be found working in all areas of animal healthcare. From large animal hospitals to small animal clinics, from zoos to research laboratories, vet techs play a vital role in keeping our animal companions healthy and safe.
National Veterinary Technician Week is celebrated every year during the third week of October. This year’s celebration will take place October 13-19.
The Importance of Vet Techs
