History of Virginia Tech
virginia tech was founded in 1872 as a land-grant college. The school has grown over the years, adding new programs and locations. The main campus is located in Blacksburg, Virginia, with satellite campuses in Northern Virginia, Hampton Roads, Richmond, and Roanoke.
Virginia Tech offers over 200 undergraduate and graduate degree programs to its more than 34,000 students. The school is organized into seven colleges: Agriculture and Life Sciences, Architecture and Urban Studies, Business, Engineering, Human Sciences, Liberal Arts and Human Sciences, Natural Resources and Environment, and Science.
The school’s sports teams are known as the Hokies and compete in the NCAA Division I Atlantic Coast Conference. The football team has won 12 conference championships and appeared in 32 bowl games, most recently the 2019 Belk Bowl.

When is Virginia Tech Graduation?
The university holds two commencement ceremonies each year, one in May and one in December. The May commencement ceremony celebrates the accomplishments of undergraduate and graduate students receiving degrees from the university’s seven colleges. The December commencement ceremony is for doctoral candidates and those receiving master’s degrees from the Graduate School.
Where is Virginia Tech Graduation?
The May commencement ceremony is held on the Drillfield, weather permitting, or in Lane Stadium if inclement weather exists. The December commencement ceremony is held inside Cassell Coliseum.
How do I find out who my guest speaker will be?
The university does not release the names of guest speakers until all arrangements have been finalized, usually a few weeks before the ceremony. However, we encourage you to check back here for updates as we get closer to commencement weekend.
