Tech N9ne was born Aaron Dontez Yates on November 8, 1971, in Kansas City, Missouri. He began rhyming at age 12 and would co-found the rap group Black Mafia in 1988. The duo would release the album BDK on independent label Wetworks in 1996 before Yates decided to embark on a solo career two years later. Along with fellow Kansas City MCs such as Mental Grip, Skatterman & Snug Brim, and the D.O.C., Tech N9ne built a strong local following in the mid-’90s by releasing a series of independently distributed 12″ singles. By the end of the decade, his underground reputation had begun to spread beyond Kansas City, and he released his debut solo album, The Calm Before the Storm, in 1999.
