Caltech was founded as a preparatory and vocational school by Amos G. Throop in 1891 and began offering college-level courses by the 1910s. The vocational and preparatory schools were disbanded and absorbed by the college in 1920. Throop College was renamed to Throop University in honor of its founder, President Henry E. Ralston.
