History

Florida Tech is a private research university located in Melbourne, Florida. The university was founded in 1958 as Brevard Engineering College and became Florida Institute of Technology in 1963. The main campus is situated on 130 acres (53 ha) of land in the northern part of the city, with satellite campuses located throughout Central Florida.

Student Life

Located in Melbourne, Florida, on the Space Coast, Florida Tech is about an hour’s car drive from Orlando and its many attractions. The university is adjacent to the Melbourne International Airport, which offers daily flights to major cities throughout the United States.

Florida Tech’s 130-acre campus includes state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories, a library with more than 350,000 volumes and periodicals, a planetarium, two observatories, a staffed wellness center, indoor and outdoor pools, soccer and baseball fields, tennis courts and much more. Brevard County’s extensive beach and riverfront recreational facilities are just minutes away.

Living on campus is the best way to be part of the Florida Tech community and experience all that the university has to offer its students. The residence halls are within walking distance of academic buildings, dining facilities, athletic venues and recreation areas.

First-year students live in one of the five residence halls located on campus. All rooms are furnished and have Wi-Fi access; laundry facilities are located in each building. Upperclassmen can choose from a variety of apartment complexes within walking distance of campus or live off campus in Melbourne or one of the neighboring communities.
