History
Louisiana Tech University began as the Industrial Institute and College of Louisiana in 1894 during the second administration of Governor Murphy J. Foster, Sr. Louisiana Tech opened its doors in Ruston, Louisiana, on October 3, 1894 with seven faculty members and 38 students. The school was founded by W. Edwards Chase, a former Confederate cavalry colonel and Baptist minister.
Chase served as the first president of Louisiana Tech until his death in 1914. The university was renamed in his honor as Chase Memorial Industrial Institute; the charter of the institution was amended in 1920 to its present name, Louisiana Polytechnic Institute. A few years later, in 1923, the original campus was moved from Ruston to its present location—a site donated by Joseph A. Biedenharn near downtown Ruston.
Construction on Old Main began on May 7, 1924 under a contract let to George A. Caldwell and Sons Company of Alexandria. When completed on November 1 at a cost of $290,000, it housed classrooms, an auditorium-chapel seating over 800 persons (now Howard Auditorium), offices for the president and deans (now Sydnor Hall), an air-conditioned commissary (later converted into Payne Hall), and quarters for 75 students (later known as Legacy Hall). Howard Hall is now used by Smittcamp Honors College classes among others while Legacy Hall houses performing arts programs including dance and music programs along with ROTC drills and classes held by various academic departments at Tech

Location of Ruston
Ruston is a city in and the parish seat of Lincoln Parish, Louisiana, United States. It is the largest city in the eastern part of the state. As of the 2010 United States Census, the population was 21,859, reflecting an increase of 6.4 percent from the count of 20,546 recorded at the 2000 census. Ruston is near the eastern border of the Ark-La-Misperception and therefore is part of the Ark-La-Miss region.

Monroe’s History
The land where Monroe is now located was originally inhabited by Native Americans. The Mississippian culture peoples built mounds along the Ouachita River, and the Caddo cultures inhabited the area between the 30th and 10th centuries. The land was later settled by Europeans in the mid-1700s, and became part of the United States in 1803 as part of the Louisiana Purchase.
Monroe was founded in 1819 as Fort Monroe, a military outpost by Stanislaus Lewis, a lieutenant under General Andrew Jackson. It was named after Lewis’ commanding officer, James Monroe. The city grew quickly due to its strategic location on the Ouachita River and its position on the stagecoach route between New Orleans and Nashville. In 1830, Monroe was made the Parish seat of Ouachita Parish.
During the Civil War, Monroe served as a Confederate base and was captured by Union troops in April of 1864. It remained under Union control until the end of the war. In 1873, Monroe was designated as a city, and in 1880 it became the Parish seat of newly-created Richland Parish.
Monroe’s economy has been diversified since its early days as a frontier settlement. Agriculture has always been important to the city, but it has also become home to several large manufacturing plants, including paper mills and chemical plants. The city is also home to Louisiana Tech University, which adds to the city’s cultural vitality.
