As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 30,435. It is the county seat of Putnam County and home to Tennessee Technological University.

History of Tennessee Tech
Tennessee Tech was founded in 1915 as a land-grant college. It was originally known as Dixie College. The school was renamed in 1917 to Tennessee Polytechnic Institute after adding more programs and faculty. The name was again changed in 1965 to its current name, Tennessee Technological University. Tennessee Tech is located in Cookeville, Tennessee, about an hour’s drive from Nashville.

The school’s current name and status were achieved in 1965 when it was renamed Tennessee Technological University and given university status. The university is organized into eight colleges: Agriculture and Human Sciences, Business, Education, Engineering, Graduate Studies, Basic and Applied Sciences,Interdisciplinary Studies, and Fine Arts.

Tennessee Tech was originally a part of the University of Tennessee when it was founded in 1915.UT offered technical programs in Cookeville as part of its Extension Division, and many of UT’s academic programs were first taught in Cookeville. The campus became known over the years as the University of Tennessee at Cookeville (UT-Cookeville), and it became a separate institution in 1965.
