Texas Tech University is located in Lubbock, Texas. Lubbock is a city in and the county seat of Lubbock County, Texas, united states The city is located in the northwestern part of the state, a region known historically and geographically as the Llano Estacado and ecologically is part of the southern end of the High Plains. It forms part of the South Plains region.
History
Texas Tech University was founded on February 10, 1923, as Texas Technological College in Lubbock, Texas. The school’s first president was Lawrence Sullivan Ross, who served from 1925 to 1950.
Pre-history
Though human habitation in the area now known as Lubbock dates back to the early 12th century, the city’s recorded history begins with the establishment of a fort by Spanish conquistador Alonso de Leon in 1683. Located near the site of present-day Abernathy, Texas, the fort was one of a chain of forts intended to protect royal interests from hostile Apache and Comanche bands. The fort, San Agustin de Laredo, was not completed until 1718, and it soon fell into disrepair. In 1772 Spanish authorities decided to abandon all but two of their forts in northwest Texas. The two that remained were those at San Saba and Presidio La Bahia near Goliad.
