As of fall Semester 2013, the university consisted of 12 colleges and schools offering more than 150 courses of study leading to bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degrees.

History

texas tech University began as Texas’ preeminent institution of higher education for the western half of the state. Now known as “West Texas’ First University,” we have a storied past that is inseparable from the development of the Llano Estacado – the High Plains region of Texas and New Mexico.

Our founding in 1923 occurred at a time when the western two-thirds of Texas was considered a frontier. There were only two other state-supported colleges west of San Antonio, and none between here and California. West Texas was in desperate need of higher education, and our founding fathers had the vision to provide it.

Located in Lubbock, Texas, we are situated on what was once part of George W. Littlefield’s great XIT Ranch. Mr. Littlefield, an Austin businessman and philanthropist, donated more than 2,000 acres to help establish our campus. The first building on campus – now our Administration Building – opened its doors in 1925 with 33 faculty members and 500 students.
