Chris Beard, the former University of Texas at El Paso men’s basketball coach, has been hired as the new head football coach at texas tech university the school announced Sunday.

Beard, who led UTEP to a 20-10 record this season, replaces Kliff Kingsbury, who was fired last week after compiling a 35-40 record in six seasons with the Red Raiders.

“We are thrilled to welcome Chris Beard as our new head football coach,” said texas tech Athletic Director Kirby Hocutt in a statement. “Chris is a proven winner and will provide strong leadership for our program.”

Beard, 44, has also served as an assistant coach texas tech and Angelo State University.

The new texas tech football coach is Matt Wells. He was born on November 5, 1974 in Logan, Utah. Wells played quarterback for Logan High School and Utah State University. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at the University of New Mexico in 1998. Wells has also coached at Navy, the University of Montana, New Mexico State University, and Texas Tech.
