Maryland is a state located in the Mid-Atlantic region of the united states bordering Virginia, West Virginia, and Washington, D.C. to its south and west; Pennsylvania to its north; and Delaware to its east. The state’s largest city is Baltimore, and its capital is Annapolis. Among its occasional nicknames are Old Line State, the Free State, and the Chesapeake Bay State. It is named after the English queen Henrietta Maria, known in England as Queen Mary. Sixteen of Maryland’s twenty-three counties border the tidal waters of the Chesapeake Bay estuary and its many tributaries, which combined total more than 4,000 miles of shoreline. History
The Maryland Terrapins football team represents the University of Maryland in the sport of American football. The Terps compete in the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) and the Big Ten Conference. The program has won seven conference championships, including five in the ACC. Maryland shares the record for most ACC championships with Clemson, Florida State, and virginia tech As of 2019, Maryland has produced three NFL undrafted quarterbacks who have started for their respective teams: Vinnie Testaverde for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Scott Mitchell for the Detroit Lions, and Frank Reich for the Buffalo Bills.
The Terps began their existence in 1892 when then-Maryland governor Elihu Emory Webster divided a piece of land purchased by him near College Park into sections that were auctioned off to establish a state normal school, or teachers’ college. The school’s first head coach was Frank Dobson and he led Maryland to a 7–3 record in 1895.
Rivalry with Virginia Tech
Although the Maryland-virginia tech rivalry began with their first meeting in 1918, it wasn’t until 1957 that the annual game became known as the “Black Diamond Trophy” game. The trophy is a replica of a coal mining cart and pays homage to both states’ history of mining. The winner of the game receives a year’s worth of bragging rights, as well as the coveted trophy.
The rivalry intensified in the 1980s and 1990s when both teams were members of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC). Virginia Tech is a public land-grant university serving the Commonwealth of Virginia, United States. The main campus is in Blacksburg, Virginia; other campuses include the Virginia Tech Graduate Center in Alexandria and the Virginia Tech Research Center in Arlington. Virginia Tech offers 220 bachelor’s degree programs, 153 master’s degree programs, 94 doctoral degree programs through its 13 colleges and 38 graduate school departments.
Virginia Tech traces its roots to the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College, founded in 1872 as an all-male land-grant college. In 1896, the college officially changed its name to Virginia Polytechnic Institute (VPI), largely due to lobbying by John Henric Clarke Stallard and Stephen Duncan Pollard who were contemporaries of President Milton Jefferson Pendleton. The name was selected as a compromise between rivals that wished the college’s name to reflect its agricultural and engineering origins (e.g., VPI&SU) and those who wanted it to reflect tradition (e.g., W&L).[8][9] When it joined the newly formed Commonwealth of Virginia’s higher education system in 1904 after absorbing several smaller schools such as Normal College (present day Radford University), it was renamed once again to Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University.
Rivalry with Maryland
The Maryland-Virginia Tech rivalry is a long-standing college football rivalry between the Maryland Terrapins and virginia tech hokies The two teams first played in 1918 and have met every year since 1960. Maryland and Virginia Tech first met on the gridiron in 1918, with Maryland winning 18-0. The two teams played each other sporadically until 1958, when they became permanent opponents in what was then known as the Dixie Classic (now the Sun Bowl). In 1960, the two teams began playing each other every year as members of the Atlantic Coast Conference.
The rivalry has been particularly intense since Maryland joined the ACC in 1953. Virginia Tech considers itself to be the “natural rival” for Maryland, as both schools are located within 100 miles of each other in neighboring states. The intensity of the rivalry was magnified in November 2005 when Maryland defeated then-#5 Virginia Tech 17-14 in Blacksburg, which ended Virginia Tech’s perfect season and chances at a National Championship berth. This victory also gave Maryland its first win over a ranked opponent in five years.
