The city motto is “Friendship Only Bestows Its Blessings Upon Those Who Deserve It”, which has been displayed on street signs throughout the city since 1957 when that phrase was first used at a Chamber of Commerce banquet attended by then-Mayor Orbison Dillard Neely Jr..
