According to a 2015 Census estimate, Lubbock had an urban population of 273,840; however no recent estimate for its metropolitan population is available because Jones and Dawson have not been considered as part of Lubbock’s metropolitan area by the U.S. Office of Management and Budget (OMB) as of 2019.

Lubbock’s nickname is “Hub City”, referring to it being centrally located between several smaller cities around it, making it a transportation hub for the region. The city motto is “Friendship Only Bestows Its Blessings Upon Those Who Deserve It”, which has been displayed on street signs throughout the city since 1957 when that phrase was first used at a Chamber of Commerce banquet attended by then-Mayor Orbison Dillard Neely Jr..
