History
Founded in 1922, Brooklyn Technical High School is one of three original specialized high schools operated by the New York City Department of Education, the city’s public school system. Brooklyn Tech is considered one of the most prestigious and selective high schools in the United States, admitting only the highest-performing students in eighth grade from throughout New York City.
In its earliest years, Brooklyn Tech served as a model for other specialized high schools around the country. Today, it remains one of the largest and most competitive high schools in America, with an enrollment of over six thousand students. The school has produced a number of notable alumni, including Nobel laureate Stanley B. Prusiner and six Pulitzer Prize winners.

Brooklyn Technical High School enrolls approximately 3,700 students from across Brooklyn. The school has a competitive admissions process, and students must take an entrance exam to be considered for admission. Academic Programs

Specialized High Schools Admissions Test
The Specialized High Schools Admissions Test (SHSAT) is an exam used to determine admission to all but one of New York City’s nine Specialized High Schools. The racial makeup of Brooklyn Tech is 44% Hispanic, 30% African American, 16% Asian, and 10% White. Brooklyn Tech draws its students from all over the borough of Brooklyn. In order to be eligible to take the SHSAT, students must first take the 8th grade standardized English Language Arts and Math exams.
Gifted and Talented Program
Brooklyn Technical High School offers a Gifted and Talented Program (G&T) for students who demonstrate high levels of ability and achievement. The program is selective, and admission is based on an exam given to students in the spring of their eighth grade year.
Currently, approximately 22% of Brooklyn Tech’s student body is enrolled in the G&T program. These students take accelerated classes and have the opportunity to pursue their interests through Advanced Placement (AP), Honors, and elective courses.
Extracurricular Activities
Brooklyn Technical High School offers a variety of extracurricular activities for students to get involved in. These activities include sports, clubs, and other organizations. There are many benefits to participating in extracurricular activities, such as building leadership skills, developing teamwork skills, and gaining experiences that can help with college applications.
Robotics
Robotics is a Brooklyn Tech club that allows students to explore their interests in science and engineering. The club meets once a week after school and competes in the First Robotics Competition.
Model United Nations
Since joining Model United Nations, I have vastly improved my public speaking, research, and writing skills. In addition, I have learned how to be a better listener and friend by trading ideas and hearing different points of view in a respectful way. Lastly, Model UN has helped me understand global politics and American foreign policy in a more nuanced way. I am proud to say that I was on the winning team at the Yale Model UN Conference last year, and I hope to continue my success at future conferences.
Sports
Sports are a big part of Brooklyn Tech culture. Most students join a team in their freshman or sophomore year and remain on the team until they graduate.
There are three seasons – fall, winter and spring. In the fall, we have football, soccer, cross country and tennis. Winter sports include basketball, bowling, fencing, indoor track and swimming. Spring sports are baseball, softball, lacrosse, outdoor track and volleyball.
Our teams have a long history of success. We have won numerous city championships and our athletes have gone on to compete at the collegiate level and beyond.

Neil deGrasse Tyson
Neil deGrasse Tyson is an American astrophysicist, author, and science communicator. He is currently the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space and a research associate in the department of astrophysics at the American Museum of Natural History.
Harvey Keitel
Harvey Keitel is an American actor and producer who has appeared in films such as ‘Taxi Driver’, ‘Reservoir Dogs’, and ‘Pulp Fiction’. He attended Brooklyn Technical High School, where he discovered his love of acting. He went on to study method acting at the Stella Adler Conservatory of Acting and the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute.
Susan Polgar
Susan Polgar is a world-renowned chess grandmaster, chess coach, and author. She was the first woman ever to earn the chess Grandmaster title.
Polgar was born in Hungary in 1969 and began playing competitively at the age of four. She soon became a national champion and represented her country in many international competitions. In 1991, she defected to the United States with her husband, Paul Truong, also a competitive chess player.
Once in the United States, Polgar quickly made a name for herself in the chess world. In 1992, she won the U.S. Women’s Chess Championship, becoming the first foreigner ever to do so. She went on to win the championship three more times. In 1996, she became only the third woman ever to be awarded the Grandmaster title.
In addition to her successful career as a player, Polgar has also been very active as a coach and author. She coached the U.S. women’s Olympic team to a historic gold medal in 2008, and she has written several books on chess strategy and tactics.
