The global perspective

For close to three decades now, the U.S. has been the undisputed leader in technology. Companies such as Google, Apple, Microsoft, and Amazon have changed the way we live and work. But that dominance is being challenged by the rise of other countries who are investing heavily in tech. China, in particular, is determined to become the world’s leading superpower in AI and other cutting-edge technologies.

Tech in other countries

Sure, the U.S. might be the birthplace of the Internet, but that doesn’t mean other countries aren’t doing some seriously innovative things with technology. In fact, when it comes to certain areas of tech, it’s arguable that other countries are leading the way.

To get a better sense of what’s going on in the tech world beyond our borders, we reached out to entrepreneurs and investors in a variety of countries to get their takes on the scene in their neck of the woods. Here’s what they had to say.

“I think China is 5 to 10 years ahead of the U.S. in terms of mobile payment adoption,” says Matthew Brennan, co-founder of China Channel, a consultancy focused on helping Western companies understand and enter the Chinese market. “We are only just beginning to see widespread adoption of mobile payment in America with Apple Pay and Android Pay, but in China it has been mainstream for a while now.”

Brennan points to WeChat Pay and Alipay — two dominant mobile payment platforms in China with over 1 billion users each — as examples of how advanced Chinese consumers are in this area. And it’s not just payments: “The whole mobile ecosystem around messaging, commerce, social media etc., is far more developed in China than anywhere else,” says Brennan.

“Europeans have been very active users and proponents of digital technologies for several years now,” says Katarzyna Mazurkiewicz-Bełdzińska, managing director at Google Poland. “Digital technologies provide Europeans with opportunities that go beyond developed nations.”

The global economy

The global economy has been through a tough few years, but there are signs that things are starting to improve. One area that has been doing particularly well is the technology sector.

There is strong demand for tech products and services all around the world, and this is having a knock-on effect on the global economy. As more businesses invest in technology, they are seeing increased profits and productivity. This is good news for the global economy as a whole.

The American consumer

The smartphone wars are over. We have a duopoly: Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android together power more than 99% of the world’s smartphones. In first-quarter 2019, Android had a market share of 76.1%, while iOS had a market share of 22.1%. (IDC)

The average person

According to a new report from the professional services firm Accenture, the typical American consumer is interested in tech that makes life more efficient and easier — even if it comes at the cost of personal data privacy.

The report, released this week, is based on a survey of more than 4,000 people across 10 countries. In addition to the united states the research includes responses from China, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.

While there are some notable differences between how consumers in different countries feel about technology, there are also some troubling commonalities. For example, 43 percent of respondents said they would be willing to trade personal data for discounts or free products and services — a 10 percent increase from last year’s survey.

The tech industry

is booming in the United States, with new products and services being released at a rapid pace. But what about the rest of the world? Are they keeping up with the American consumer, or are they lagging behind?

A recent study by GfK, a global research firm, found that the American consumer is outpacing the rest of the world when it comes to technology adoption. The study looked at eight different countries – the United States, China, Germany, India, Japan, Russia, South Korea and the United Kingdom – and found that Americans are more likely to own and use a variety of different consumer technologies.

Some of the findings of the study include:
-Americans are more likely to own a smartphone (88%), tablet (57%), laptop (77%) or desktop computer (78%) than any other country.
-Americans are also more likely to use their devices for activities such as watching videos (79%), using social media (74%), listening to music (73%) or playing games (51%).
-When it comes to new and emerging technologies, Americans are again leading the way. For example, 43% of Americans own a wearable device such as a fitness tracker or smartwatch, compared to just 16% of Chinese consumers.

So why are Americans so far ahead when it comes to technology adoption? There are a number of factors that could be at play.

For one, American consumers tend to be early adopters of new products and technologies. This is due in part to the fact that there are many technology companies based in the United States, so there is always something new and exciting to try out. In addition, American consumers tend to be well-informed about new products thanks to a variety of tech news sources and blogs.

Another factor could be that Americans simply have more disposable income than consumers in other countries. This allows them to splurge on new gadgets and devices without having to worry about whether they can afford it or not.

Whatever the reasons may be, it’s clear that America is leading the way when it comes to technology adoption. And with new advancements happening all the time, it’s unlikely that this will change anytime soon.
