Pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE)
In order to become credentialed, you must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). The VTNE is a computer-based exam administered year-round at testing sites around the world. The American Association of Veterinary State Boards (AAVSB) oversees the VTNE and develops the test in conjunction with subject matter experts from across the country.
You must have an Associate’s degree or higher from an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology program in order to sit for the VTNE. Once you have completed a state-approved program, you will need to submit an application to take the test through the AAVSB. You will be required to pay a fee and submit transcripts from your schooling as well as proof of completion of at least 300 clinical hours.
The VTNE is comprised of 170 multiple-choice questions that cover nine content areas:animal health and disease, animal husbandry, clinical procedures, diagnostics, pharmacology, practice management, principles of surgery, research and veterinary ethics.You will have 3.5 hours to complete the exam.
A score of 575 is needed to pass the VTNE, but this may vary by state. Check with your state regulatory board to find out what score is required for licensure in your state. After passing the VTNE, you will need to apply for licensure through your state regulatory board. Each state has different requirements for licensure, so be sure to check with your board for specific requirements in your state.
