In order to become a certified medical technologist, you will need to earn an associate’s degree or bachelor’s degree in medical technology from an accredited institution. Once you have completed your academic requirements, you will then need to take and pass the certified medical technologist (CMT) exam administered by the American medical technologists (AMT).

What is a medical technologist?

A medical technologist is a healthcare professional who performs laboratory tests to help diagnose, treat and prevent disease. These tests can detect the presence of infections, identify inherited disorders, assess organ function and screen for cancer.

Medical technologists work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, private clinics, public health laboratories and research facilities. They may specialize in a particular area of laboratory medicine, such as microbiology, immunology or clinical chemistry.

In order to practice in most states, medical technologists must be certified by a nationally recognized organization such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP). Certification typically requires the completion of an accredited educational program and passing a standardized exam.

Job duties of a medical technologist

Medical technologists (commonly called clinical laboratory scientists or medical laboratory technicians) work in hospitals, clinics, blood banks, and laboratories. They perform tests on body fluids and tissues to detect abnormalities or disease.

Medical technologists generally work in one of four areas: blood banking, chemistry, hematology, or microbiology.

Blood bankers collect and test blood and blood components. They may also work in donor relations, recruitment, and quality control. Chemistry technologists analyze body fluids to determine their chemical makeup. They use automated equipment and computers to perform many tests.
Hematology technologists study blood cells and blood-forming tissues. They use microscopes to identify abnormal cells in blood samples. Microbiology technologists examine microorganisms (tiny living things that can be seen only through a microscope) to determine their shape, size, structure, and color.

How to become a medical technologist

To become certified, medical technologists typically need a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution and professional experience in the field. Some states may require certification or licensure. The American Medical Technologists (AMT) offers the Registered Medical Technologist (RMT) credential, which requires a combination of education, experience, and passing an exam. To be eligible for the RMT credential, candidates must have completed a bachelor’s degree in medical technology or a related scientific discipline from an accredited institution, or they must have completed a non-accredited bachelor’s degree along with specific coursework to meet AMT’s education standards. Candidates must also have completed at least one year of full-time work as a medical technologist in the preceding five years. The exam consists of 200 multiple-choice questions that cover four content areas: management and operations; quality assurance; education and training; and research and development.

There are two ways to become a certified medical laboratory technician (MLT). One is to earn an associate’s degree in medical laboratory technology from an accredited college or university and then sit for a certification examination administered by either the Board of Certification of the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel (NCA). The other way to become certified is to have completed a military medical laboratory training program and then have at least one year of full-time civilian work experience as an MLT. You can then sit for the ASCP or NCA certification examination.

The average salary for a Medical technologist is $66,326 per year in the united states

Job outlook

The job outlook for medical technologists is excellent. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment in the field will grow by 13 percent between 2018 and 2028, which is much faster than the average for all occupations. As the population continues to age, the demand for diagnostic testing will rise, providing good opportunities for those with the necessary skills and training.

To become a certified medical technologist, you will need to complete an accredited certification program. After completing a program, you will need to pass an exam administered by a nationally recognized certifying organization such as the American Society for Clinical Pathology or the National Credentialing Agency for Laboratory Personnel.
