Nail Technician Programs

These programs typically last between six and eight months and cover topics such as nail care, manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, salon safety, and customer service. Some programs also include an externship component, which gives students the opportunity to gain real-world experience working in a salon.
In order to become licensed in Michigan, nail technicians must complete a state-approved program and pass both a written and practical exam. Apprenticeship
An apprenticeship is the most common path to becoming a licensed nail technician in Michigan. Although there are some schools that offer programs in nail technology, an apprenticeship will give you one-on-one training with a licensed professional, and you’ll be able to earn money while you learn.
To become an apprentice, you must be at least 18 years old and have a high school diploma or GED. You’ll also need to pass a background check and have evidence of good physical health, as you’ll be working with chemicals and other potentially hazardous materials. Once you’ve met these requirements, you can contact a local salon or spa that offers apprenticeships to inquire about available positions.
State Board Exams

-Carry out other nail treatments, such as polish changes and paraffin dips
You can prepare for your practical exam by practicing your skills on friends, family members, or fellow students. Once you’ve passed both the written and practical exams, you’ll receive your nail technician license from the Michigan Board of Cosmetology.
License Renewal
In Michigan, a nail technician license expires every two years on October 31st. The renewal fee is $30.
You will need to complete at least six (6) hours of continuing education in order to renew your license. Of those six hours, at least three (3) must be in subject areas related to infection control and three (3) must be related to nails, cosmetology or makeup.
