There’s no denying it – the tech industry is booming. With job growth outpacing that of other sectors and an ever-increasing demand for tech talent, now is a great time to start a career in tech.
But what if you don’t have a background in technology? Or what if you’re not sure where to start?
Don’t worry – you don’t need to be a computer scientist to break into tech. In fact, many of the most successful people in tech come from non-traditional backgrounds.
Here are 10 tips from an insider on how to break into tech:
1. Do your research
2. Identify your transferable skills
3. Find a “foot in the door” job or internship
4. Get involved with the tech community
5. Sharpen your technical skills
6. Learn to code
7. Network, network, network!
8. Stay up-to-date with industry trends
9. Be persistent and don’t give up!
10. Believe in yourself!
Network
The best way to get your foot in the door of the tech industry is to network, network, network. Get connected with as many people as you can, both in person and online. Go to industry events and meetups, and connect with people on social media The more people you know, the more likely you are to hear about job openings and opportunities.
Get a Mentor
The best way to learn about tech is to get a mentor. A mentor can guide you, provide advice, and introduce you to people in the industry.
If you don’t have a mentor, there are a few ways to find one. You can reach out to your network of friends and see if anyone knows someone in tech who can help you. Or, you can attend industry events and meetups where you’re likely to meet potential mentors.
Once you’ve found a mentor, make sure to nurture the relationship by staying in touch and being polite and grateful for their time.
Join or Start a Club
“The best way to learn about anything is by doing,” says Lambert. “And the best way to learn about tech is by building things.” You don’t need to be a coder to join or start a club. If you’re interested in design, there are clubs devoted to user experience and interface design, for example. If you want to learn about entrepreneurship, look for entrepreneurship clubs. There are also tons of women in tech groups and organizations that can give you insight and support as you navigate your way through the industry.
Go to Conferences
One of the best ways to meet people in tech and get your foot in the door is to attend conferences. When you’re starting out, it can be tough to get your boss to pay for your ticket, but there are often discounts for students and early-bird registrations. If you’re really committed, you can also volunteer to help out at the conference (this is how I got my start). Not only will you get free entry, but you’ll also get to meet a lot of people and see firsthand how a conference is run.
There are conferences for everything these days, so figure out what area you’re interested in and start Googling. A few of my personal favorites are TwilioCon (for developers), South by Southwest (for music, film, and technology), and Le Web (for startups). But there are literally thousands of others to choose from.
Read Books and Blogs
If you want to learn more about tech and how it works, read as much as you can on the subject. There are tons of excellent books and blog articles out there that can teach you a lot about the industry. A few good places to start include the following:

Find an Internship
One of the best ways to learn about a career in tech and get your foot in the door is to find an internship. Internships are typically paid positions lasting between 3-6 months, and many companies use internships as a way to identify and then hire entry-level employees. If you’re interested in an internship, start by identifying companies you’d like to work for and then reach out to their HR departments. Many internships are listed on job boards like Indeed.com or SimplyHired.com, so be sure to search those sites as well.
