SEO Basics

You’ve likely heard the term “SEO” before, but what does it mean? SEO stands for “search engine optimization.” It’s the process of increasing the visibility and organic search results of a website or web page in search engines like Google, Bing, and Yahoo.

Set up GSC and Bing Webmaster tools

There are a couple of tools you need to set up to make sure your website is being seen and indexed by Google and other search engines. The first is Google Search Console (formerly known as Google Webmaster Tools). This is a free service provided by Google that helps you monitor your website’s performance in their search engine. You’ll need to verify ownership of your website with them, which you can do through various methods such as adding a meta tag to your site’s HTML or uploading an HTML file.

The second tool you need to set up is Bing Webmaster Tools. This is similar to Google Search Console, but for Microsoft’s Bing search engine. Again, you’ll need to verify ownership of your website, but then you’ll be able to see how well your site is performing in Bing and get tips on how to improve its ranking.

Set up Google Analytics

If you want to track your website’s traffic, you’ll need to set up Google Analytics. Google Analytics is a free service that gives you insights into how people use your site. To set it up, you’ll need to create a Google Analytics account and add a few lines of code to your website.

Install and configure an SEO plugin (wordpress)

If you want to optimize your website for search engines, one of the first things you need to do is install an SEO plugin. WordPress has a number of great plugins that can help you with this, but our favorite is Yoast SEO.

Once you’ve installed and activated the plugin, it’s time to configure it. This can seem daunting, but don’t worry – we’ll walk you through the process step by step.

First, you need to go to the Yoast SEO settings page and click on the ‘General’ tab. Here, you’ll see a section labeled ‘Webmaster Tools’. This is where you can enter the verification codes for Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.

If you don’t have an account with either of these services, we recommend signing up for both. They’re both free, and they provide valuable data that can help you improve your website’s SEO.

Once you’ve entered your verification codes, scroll down to the ‘Authentication’ section and click on the ‘Google Analytics’ tab. Here, you’ll need to enter your Google Analytics ID.

If you don’t have a Google Analytics ID, don’t worry – Yoast SEO will generate one for you. Just click on the ‘Get your Analytics ID’ button and follow the instructions.

Once you’ve entered your Google Analytics ID, scroll down to the ‘Titles & Metas’ section and click on the ‘Homepage’ tab. Here, you’ll see a field labeled ‘Title template’. This is where you can customize how your website’s title will appear in search results.

By default, Yoast SEO will use this template: %%sitename%% %%page%% %%sep%% %%sitedesc%%. However, we recommend changing it to: %%sitename%% – %%sitedesc%%. This will make sure that your website’s name appears before its description in search results, making it more likely that people will click on it.

Once you’ve made your changes, scroll down and click on the ‘Save Changes’ button at the bottom of the page. That’s it! You’ve successfully configured Yoast SEO for your WordPress website.

Keyword Research

You can use a number of techniques to keyword research, but one of the most effective is to use a keyword research tool. There are a number of different keyword research tools available, but one of the best is Google AdWords Keyword Planner.

Identify your competitors

In order to identify your competitors, you need to first decide what keywords you want to rank for. Let’s say you want to rank for the keyword “Tech N9ne.” Once you have your keyword, you can use a tool like Google Keyword Planner to find out who your competition is.

Type in your keyword into the “Find new keywords” field and hit “Get ideas.”

Scroll down to the “Keyword Ideas” section and take a look at the columns on the right side of the screen. The “Competition” column will give you an idea of how difficult it will be to rank for a certain keyword. The higher the competition, the more difficult it will be to rank.

Conduct a keyword gap analysis

When conducting keyword research, one of the first things you want to do is a keyword gap analysis. This will help you determine which keywords your competitors are ranking for that you are not.

To do this, you will need to use a tool like Ahrefs or SEMrush. Once you have found a list of keywords that your competitors are ranking for, you can then start to optimize your website for those keywords.

Find your main ‘money’ keywords

One of the first and most important steps in any SEO or keyword research campaign is to find your main ‘money’ keywords – the ones that are going to get you the most traffic and convert the best.

There are a few different ways to go about this, but one of our favorite methods is using Google’s Keyword Planner.

To get started, go to Google’s Keyword Planner tool and sign in with your Google account. Once you’re signed in, enter your website’s URL into the “Your product or service” field and hit “Get ideas.”

Google will then generate a list of related keywords – both broad and narrow – that you can use for your SEO or keyword research campaign.

To narrow down this list, look for keywords with high search volume (at least a few hundred searches per month) and low competition (less than a few hundred thousand results). These are the keywords that are most likely to get you traffic and convert well.

Technical SEO

Technical SEO can be a great way to improve your website’s ranking in the search engines. There are a few things you can do to improve your website’s technical SEO, such as improving your website’s loading speed, optimizing your website’s title and description, and more. Let’s talk about some of the benefits of technical SEO.

Leverage “Inspect URL” feature in GSC

In Google Search Console’s “Inspect URL” feature, webmasters can check if their website is experiencing any issues with Google’s indexing. This can be useful in finding and fixing any potential problems that may be preventing your website from being properly indexed.

Ensure your website is mobile-friendly

More people use mobile devices than ever before to access the internet. In fact, mobile internet usage has now overtaken desktop usage for the first time. This trend is only going to continue, so it’s essential that your website is optimised for mobile devices.

There are a number of ways to ensure your website is mobile-friendly. The most important is to have a responsive design, which means that your website will automatically adjust to fit the screen size of the device it’s being viewed on. This is the best option as it means you only have to maintain one set of code and one set of content, which makes things much easier in the long run.

Another option is to create a separate mobile version of your website, which can be accessed by users when they visit your website on a mobile device. This option requires more work as you need to maintain two sets of code and content, but it can be worth it if you want complete control over how your website looks on mobile devices.

Whatever option you choose, make sure you test your website on a range of different mobile devices to make sure it looks and works as you want it to.

Check your site’s loading speed

Check your site’s loading speed and make sure it’s optimized for mobile devices. A slow site can frustrate users and hurt your business. Use Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool to test your site’s loading speed on both desktop and mobile devices.

On-page and Content

On-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website to rank higher in the search engines. The main goal of on-page SEO is to improve the visibility of a website so that it can attract more visitors from the organic or unpaid search results. There are many factors that contribute to on-page SEO, such as title tags, meta descriptions, header tags, and keyword density.

Fix duplicate, missing, and truncated title tags

– Check each page to make sure that the title tag is unique and accurately describes the page’s content
– If you have multiple pages with the same or similar title tags, consider merging them into one page
– Make sure that all of your title tags are accurate and descriptive of the page’s content. Avoid using generic terms like “home”, “about us”, or “contact us”
– If you have any truncated title tags, make sure to edit them so that they accurately describe the page’s content

Find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions

If you want your website to rank high in search engine results pages (SERPs), you need to make sure you have unique and relevant meta descriptions. A meta description is a short piece of text that appears under your page title in SERPs. It should give searchers an accurate snapshot of what they can expect to find on your page.

Unfortunately, many websites have either duplicate or missing meta descriptions. This can hurt your click-through rates and drag down your SERP rankings. In this article, we’ll show you how to find and fix duplicate or missing meta descriptions.

What Is a Meta Description?
A meta description is a short description of a page’s content. It should be specific and describe the main points of the article, using keywords that are relevant to the topic. Meta descriptions are typically between 150-160 characters long, although Google has said that they may be longer in certain cases.

Here’s an example of a meta description from an article on Yoast.com:

“In this post, we’ll give you an introduction to Google Search Console (formerly Google Webmaster Tools). We’ll show you how to set it up and use it to improve your SEO.”

As you can see, this meta description is short, specific, and uses relevant keywords. It accurately reflects the content of the article and entices searchers to click through.

Find and fix multiple H1 tags

On a Tech N9ne song, the chorus goes “Who do I catch?” implying that he wants someone to rap with or battle. This is a challenge to other rappers.

Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO is the process of optimizing a website for higher search engine rankings through the creation of backlinks. By improving the number and quality of backlinks, you can increase your website’s authority and position in the search engine results pages (SERPs).

Assuming you’ve already completed an SEO audit and built a solid foundation for your website, it’s time to start thinking about link building. Link building is the process of acquiring links from other websites to your own. The more high-quality links you have pointing to your website, the higher your site will rank in search engine results pages (SERPs).

One of the best ways to get started with link building is to analyze your competitor’s link profile. This will give you an idea of which websites are linking to them, and how difficult it would be to get a link from those websites. Here are a few tips for analyzing your competitor’s link profile:

1. Use a tool like Moz’s Open Site Explorer or Majestic’s Site Explorer to see which websites are linking to your competitor.
2. Look for patterns in the linking sites. Are there certain types of sites that tend to link to your competitor? If so, those may be good targets for your own link building efforts.
3. Identify any low-hanging fruit–websites that would be easy to get a link from because they already link to similar content.
4. Once you have a list of potential target websites, take a look at their linking policies (usually located in the footer) to see if they accept guest posts or allow links in the body of their articles.
5. Finally, reach out to the webmasters of these sites and inquire about guest posting or adding a link to your website on their site.

Link intersect analysis is a process of identifying websites that link to multiple competitors, but not to you.

There are a few ways to conduct a link intersect analysis:

1. Use a tool like Link Explorer or BuzzSumo.

2. Use Google Search Console. Go to your Search Console account and click on the “Search Traffic” tab. Then, click on “Links to Your Site.” On the next page, click on “More.” From there, you can see how many websites are linking to all of the pages on your website, as well as how many websites are linking to each individual page. This will give you a good idea of where you stand in terms of links compared to your competition.

3. manually check each website that links to your competitors (this can be a time-consuming process).

4. once you have a list of websites that link to your competitors but not to you, reach out to those websites and ask them for a link.

Your competitors’ broken backlinks are a great opportunity for you to outperform them.

When a website links to another website, they’re called “backlinks.” Backlinks are important because they act as a vote of confidence for your website. The more backlinks you have, the more popular your site is, and the better your chances of ranking in Google.

But not all backlinks are created equal. A link from a high-quality website is worth more than a link from a low-quality website. And a link from a competitor’s website is worth even more.

That’s because when a competitor’s website links to yours, it’s like they’re saying, “Hey, we think you’re worth checking out.” Google takes notice of these votes of confidence and gives your site a boost in the rankings.

To find your competitors’ broken backlinks, you can use a tool like BuzzSumo. Just enter your competitor’s URL into BuzzSumo and hit “Search.” BuzzSumo will show you all the websites that link to your competitor’s site.

Next, visit each of these websites and see if there’s a way for you to get listed as well. If there is, reach out to the webmaster and let them know about your site. Most people are happy to add another resource to their website, especially if it’s relevant to their audience.

Getting listed on these websites won’t happen overnight, but it will give you a big leg up on your competition over time.
