However, the last few years have been tough for the Red Raiders. They have had three head coaches in the last four years and have not had a winning season since 2015.

The current head coach is Matt Wells, who was hired in 2019. He has a tall task ahead of him as he looks to turn around a struggling program.

Kliff Kingsbury

Kliff Timothy Kingsbury (born August 9, 1979) is an American football coach and former player. He is the head football coach at texas tech university Kingsbury was a quarterback in college and in the National Football League (NFL) for six seasons. He served as offensive coordinator at Houston and Texas A&M before being hired as head coach at his alma mater, texas tech in 2013. In his first season, Kingsbury led the Red Raiders to an 8–5 record and a win in the Holiday Bowl. The following year, he guided Texas Tech to a school-record 7–0 start before losing five of their last six games to finish 8–5 for the second consecutive year. His third season was much less successful; after starting 4–5, Kingsbury was fired on November 23, 2015 with one game remaining in the season. In 2016, he joined the Arizona Cardinals coaching staff as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Matt Wells

Former Utah State head coach Matt Wells is the new head coach of the texas tech red raiders the school announced Saturday.

Wells, who replaces Kliff Kingsbury, agreed to a six-year contract with Texas Tech that will pay him $3.5 million in 2019, rising to $4.5 million in 2024, sources told ESPN’s Chris Low.
